4-21-18 A Few Frugal Things

 A few frugal things

– My friend gave me a really nice frame that she wasn’t using anymore. Unfortunately, the glass cracked but I have been taking the glass out of our pictures because of the cats. I had found the above beautiful watercolor boat picture on sale (because it was missing a frame) for $1.99. Turns out they fit perfectly and we hung it in our entrance way by the front door. It’s funny because our entrance way looks a lot more expensive!

– Last weekend we had such a busy weekend that we didn’t feel like going to the grocery store and we have really made due with the food we had in the house. It has been a bit of a stretch but we are probably better off for eating PB&Js for work lunches.

– I found some things that I have been looking for at the thrift shop for a long time including an outside love seat. I’m washing the cushions but will probably eventually recover them.

– Still enjoying watching ER (there are 16 long seasons) on HULU. And I have also been watching Married At First Sight Australia for free on the website Daily Motion.

– Slowly putting stuff aside for another yard sale this summer. We have a great neighborhood for it and did very well last time with very low-priced items. I find it helps to just keep storing stuff in the same place until we get enough.

– We had the landlord’s handy man come for some repairs. He fixed some things and replaces some light bulbs at no cost to us. We also got a new dishwasher.

– I had purchased some closet repair supplies thinking it would be easier to fix the closet ourselves than to wait for the repair but it never got done. When I showed the handy man he already had the supplies and told me to return what I had purchased which will be about $15 back!

– I had to go to a long Friday work meeting but they fed us lunch. It was in another part of town that I’m not usually in so I took the opportunity to avoid taking the toll roads home and stop at 3 thrift shops along the way. I had some great luck with some awesome finds for us and to sell on eBay.

– I am slowly redoing our outside patio to look more like an outside living room by our beautiful pool. I spray painted a few items, bought an outside love seat, bought a couple of outside pillows. I’ll do a post on it soon.

– I made two outside solar chandeliers and they work great and are super cool looking. If we get a few more outside solar spot lights we probably wouldn’t need any electric lights at night in the back yard. This would  be a small electricity savings but, as renters, I love that we can take these with us when we move also.

– We did a huge grocery shop and have been enjoying some of our favorite and frugal meals at home. So far we are resisting take out.

– This weekend I organized and cleaned the closet. It had become a disaster site and was driving me crazy. I still need to pack up the winter clothes so that I better see and make use of my FL summer wardrobe.

– I turned all of the hangers backwards so that I would know what I am wearing and what I’m not over the summer.

Not so Frugal

– Our oldest cat was peeing blood and had to go to the vet. I tried a new vet closer to home that seemed to have similar prices. I declined several hundreds of dollars of treatments in favor of trying antibiotics first. Less invasive and one shot lasts for 2-3 weeks. So far so good.

– We still have to flea treat the pets but were able to go about 2 months between treatments and I split a dose between our two smallest cats. Still need to order more flea meds and heartworm meds for the dog but I budgeted for it.

Extra Income

– I am planning a yard sale for this summer which always motivates me to get rid of junk.

– I am revamping my eBay business because I will have 6 weeks off of work. I purchased some nice name brand clothes including Michael Kors, Lucky Brand, Harley Davidson and more to list during that time.

– The closet in my sewing/eBay room had a broken rack so the stuff was piled around and was making it harder for me to access my stuff. It was fixed today and that should help me get more organized. I plan on hanging up a lot of the new inventory I have purchased but I think that means I will need to buy or source more hangers.

– I continue to do some small online work despite a small setback.

Harmful Chemical Free Living

– I continue to look at thrift shops for a new floor steamer without any luck. Ours overheated and although we don’t have much tile in this house, I would like to deep clean it this summer.

4-03-18 Thrift Finds- Dress Pants and Clothes

The puppy always wants to see what I have bought!

I found some clothes and some more shoes! The boots are great for wearing while I am teaching in the winter. I have worn through several pairs already and was looking at buying another pair for $50 so finding these for $1 is amazing! They are Croft & Barrow brand and have memory foam padding!

They gave me my stuff in this cool bag for free! I will save it for a future gift.

I got a battery operated fan new in the box for hurricane season. I paid $1 but these things sell for over $30 during the season. I got a book of herbs, a gift bag with dachshunds on it, a glass fish, and a bunch of doggy clothes patterns.

I also got a few things to sell. The cute little girls dress, Ralph Lauren Polo boots and a Chico’s cape (it didn’t photograph well).

EDIT: The blue boots sold on Poshmark for $35 plus shipping.

I am pleased with the top dresses and skirt but the PJs ended up not working. I am going to give them to my mother.

I am especially excited for the above two pairs of Kenneth Cole dress pants. They fit me perfectly and don’t need to be hemmed. The pants with buttons are from Express and also fit great but need to be hemmed. I plan on going through all of my dress pants this summer and only keeping the best ones. I also have several pairs sitting, waiting for me to hem them.

3-7-18 Thrift Finds- Stuff to Sell on eBay, Clothes and an Octopus

I purchased the above clothes to sell on eBay and they are all great brands including Victoria’s Secret, Lucky, Hollister Shorts or Jeans Only, Harley Davidson, and White House Black Market ($1 to 1.75 each).

I got these 9 West shoes for $9.99. I might have over paid but they are my favorite shoe brand, super comfortable and I think I will wear them while teaching until they fall apart.

I am so excited about this Octopus ($2.99). It’s SOLID metal and very heavy. I plan to paint it so that it will match our pool area. The silver is currently not in great shape.

I got B a shirt ($1.99) and jacket ($5.99)and I got myself the above jacket from buckle with the tags on by way of the thrift shop for $7.99.

Here are some more items I plan to sell on eBay. The brands are Motherhood Maternity, Chicos, and LIMI. The last I had never heard of but it seems to sell for several hundred dollars per coat on eBay.

The above clothes were for me and B and cost between ($1 to 1.75 each). All of the clothes cost in this price range unless I mentioned it specifically.

This Michael Kors shirt for less than $2 will be going on eBay with a much better picture.

I was especially excited to find the duvet cover on the left with pillow cases because it matches a set I already LOVE from IKEA. I tried to buy a larger size also in this fabric but they no longer sell it. I also got the above folding stool for FREE. And the expensive pocket square was in the pocket of one of the coats.

3-26-18 Thrift Finds- Paint Bucket Spill (LumiSource WOOPSY) Lamps for $2.50 each and more

I was so excited when I found these two matching paint bucket spilled lamps.

Turns out they are these:

LumiSource WOOPSY Lamps in Yellow

As I was headed to the thrift shop, my mom asked me to get her some curtains and a shower curtain. Apparently the put it out into the universe philosophy works because I found a set of 2 green designer curtains for $2 and a set of 4 pink curtains for $4. I also got her a designed shower curtain for $1.50 and one for us too.

I bought two long grey sweaters to wear while teaching for $1.75. I got the boots for $1. And I got the set of 9 bowls that we needed for $2.50.

I bought this adorable little purse for my sister. It has skulls and looks like disney so it’s perfect for her!

I got more long sweaters, a knee brace and a heating pad. Everything less than $2 each. I have joint problems and hopefully those will help.

I got these shirts and teal bowl. The bowl is plastic and looks like ceramic so it’s perfect for living with cats.

I bought two more pairs of boots for $1 each. I’m stocking up for next winter. I paid $40 one pair of boots last year when I needed a pair so I could buy 39 pairs of boots for next year and would still be saving money.

I got this cute picture in a nice frame for our bathroom for $1.50.

This bear picture will be decor for next Christmas/Winter. I like that the cats can’t break it.

3-15-18 Thrift Finds- Baskets, Sperrys, Pillows

I had fun thrifting at my favorite local shop on half off day. I was excited to score these baskets for $1 each. I always need more storage in my sewing room.

I also bought these Sperrys for my sister but she decided I should sell them on ebay instead. We will see  how I do.

EDIT: These sold on Poshmark for $28 plus shipping.

I was able to buy some more clothes for work and life and a really cool elephant candle holder.

I was especially excited to buy this Coleman lantern. We had a rough hurricane season in FL this past year and this is the right time to start buying hurricane supplies when people forget that we might need them again next year.

I bought all of these pillows for $1 each. The left two will go great on our pool area. The two on the right turned out to be down pillows which won’t work for us so I was able to give them to my mom whose house they match better to begin with.

I bought the bento box lunch container on the left for $1 as I always pack my work lunches. The minions shoes are for my nephew. And the file organizer I got to organize lids in the cabinet.

Dollar Tree Find: Travelocity USB Charger Line

I am thrilled with this new line at Dollar Tree! I try to choose devices with this type of charger so I only have to carry one around with me. I have paid $30 for power banks prior to Hurricanes in FL abd so $1 is great. I can tell you they are pre-charged.

The high speed charging cords and car charger are also great!

*Note- The wall charger got hot after use so I wouldn’t leave it plugged in but I don’t do that anyways.

2-18-18 Thrift Finds- Pop Up Fire Truck and Squatty Potty

I’m a bit late posting this. When my nephew comes to visit I try to have some age appropriate toys for him to play with that I can donate back or pass on after he leaves. The above pop out fire truck was a huge hit with the cats, probably more than my nephew.

This is the best time of year to buy boots, especially if they are only $2 each!

This funny ride on, spin toy was probably a little too much for a 1 year old so I’m going to hold on to it until his next visit. It was $3.99 at Goodwill.

The shirt is from Anthropologie and some other small items we picked up. The shirt and graphing calculator are to sell on eBay. The large reusable bag was FREE.

That white hunk of plastic is none other than an official squatty potty. I got it for $2.50 as someone I know wanted one. They aren’t $2.50 new and this one looked like no one had ever used it. You don’t actually go to the bathroom in it so it’s not a gross as it sounds but apparently there are some great commercials for this product.

3-04-18 A Few Frugal Things – Dog and Dyson

This week was a bit rough at work. I couldn’t wait for the weekend and I feel like it has been very productive and it’s not over yet.

A few frugal things

– I took the dog to the groomer. He is little and has to have his glands done and doesn’t want to let anyone cut his nails so I decided to let them try. They only got through his back feet so they didn’t charge me for a job half done even though I offered to pay. We are slowly trying to finish the job but he isn’t making it easy.

– Our $20 Thrifted Dyson is usually amazing. Unfortunately, it stopped working. I ended up taking the base apart, thoroughly emptying it, found a clog and I actually fixed it. I have since learned that there are good youtube tutorials for this which I will try if it happens again.

– I combined trips with a visit to two thrift shops I’m not usually near. I got my thrifting fix and only found a book and small spatula so spent less than $1.50.

– We went to ALDI and spent about $150 on groceries for most of the rest of the month. We could have probably spent less with a LOT more time, planning and scratch cooking but this week we have a lot of important deadlines. Some convenience foods from the grocery store are well worth it if they help us focus on more important things than cooking this week.

– We bought a bottle of drain cleaner at Dollar Tree. I used it on the shower and it worked great so far. I have no idea why it’s so much cheaper there than anywhere else.

– Dollar Tree now has solar lights in stock again. I have been waiting since last year to complete a solar chandelier project for some free outside lighting. Ten lights for $10 is by far the best price I have found in the past year.

– I am still enjoying rewatching ER on HULU. So much cheaper than cable and no commercials.

– I was able to deliver some stuff I had for my mom and she gave us some groceries she didn’t want.

– I got so caught up on laundry last week that I have had a lot less this week. I’m trying to use one rug and one throw blanket at a time in the living room so it’s less to wash every week.

– I went to a yard sale our friends were having and they basically gave us a bunch of clothes and some other small stuff. So much fun for so little.

– My mother in law and her partner are paying for the house we will stay in during my sister in law’s wedding. This will definitely help offset the cost of plane tickets and a rental car.

– We are going to enjoy watching The Oscars tonight.

– It got cold again the past few days in Florida. It’s saving money on our AC bill again. It’s still nice out but we are starting to look forward to beach/pool weather.

Not so Frugal

– A childhood friend was in town and we met for dinner. I was able to combine it with a visit to my mother who is also having a rough week. I ended up getting dinner for 4 people at a family owned restaurant in my hometown. The portions are great so it was two meals for each person for less than $50.

Extra Income

– I had enough credit to redeem a $25 PayPal gift card.

– I have decided to have a yard sale this summer when I’m not working. It will motivate me to get rid of stuff and hopefully I’ll make a little money too. We have room to store the items in the garage.

Harmful Chemical Free Living

– Found some new awesome harmful chemical free soap at Dollar Tree and purchased more rubbing alcohol for cleaning.

Dollar Tree Find: All Natural Bolero Soap Line

Today I found this New Bolero Soap Line at Dollar Tree!

This soap is:

– Harmful Chemical Free

– 100% Vegetable Base

– Made in the USA

– Minimal, Recyclable Packaging

– Smells Great!

– ONLY $1!!!!!

2-3-18 Thrift Finds: Almost Free Yard Sale Shopping

Friends of ours were having a yard sale and I went with the puppy to visit them. They weren’t that far from closing and packing up and they loaded my arms with clothes. I believe I gave them $3 that they tried not to take. Most of the clothes fit us and it was less for them to take to the thrift shop.

They also took the below sweater off of a teddy bear and put it on the puppy. Where’s Waldo anyone?
