Use This Not That- Hand Towels vs. Paper Towels

In my kitchen, as often as possible, we use hand towels and rags instead of paper towels. We don’t use many of them but I keep an extra hamper by the kitchen that I throw them in after we have used them. We throw them in with regular household laundry and keep clean hand towels in a drawer. We save trees and money by not having to buy paper towels.

Savings- At least $6 for a pack of six (I’m not really sure because I almost never buy them)

Use This Not That- Cardboard boxes vs. Plastic storage containers

I am starting a new series on ShopaholicSavers. It’s called Use This, Not That. It will focus on simple swaps that you can make that will save you money. The first one is using cardboard boxes instead of plastic storage containers. I know that this will not work in all situations but when I am storing things inside my air conditioned house cardboard boxes work just as well as plastic storage containers and they’re free.

Savings- $5 each box 🙂

Winn-Dixie Fuelperks

Depending on where you live, certain grocery stores offer discounts on buying gas as an incentive for shopping at their store. I had researched it in the past and before there weren’t any programs in my area. However, I went to WinnDixie the other day and on the spot they registered me for their gas rewards program- Fuelperks. Depending on the amount of money you spend in their store you receive a discount at local Shell gas stations. You can also get additional money off of gas by purchasing featured items. I haven’t tried it yet because I haven’t spent enough yet to qualify but I am willing to give it a try. I wonder if your spending total that counts toward the discount is before or after coupons? Swagbucks- What I’ve won!

If you have never heard of Swagbucks or are hesitant to try it I suggest you take a look at the four amazon.com gift cards in the picture below that I have won simply by searching on their site! In a nutshell swagbucks is a search engine but you randomly earn points for searching that can be redeemed for prizes and gift cards.

I don’t know yet what I’m going to buy but it will actually be shopping for free which is what Shopaholic Savers is all about!

How to Fix a Broken Pressed Powder Compact- With Pictures

Almost a year ago I posted on How to Fix a Broken Compact. Well after freaking out two days ago when my compact broke, I realized that I had four broken compacts again and could once again create a ‘new’ one. Yay! This time I took pictures. *Tip* You can also do this with other makeup like eyeshadow.

1. Gather your broken compacts. These are the broken ones that a year ago I would have thrown away.

2. Combine them.

3. Mash them up.

4. Add a small amount of rubbing alcohol and mix. You don’t want to use too much or it will dry extra hard (You can still use it, it will just be harder).

5. Let it dry!

It’s that easy! I just saved myself $25 dollars. For those of you who are wondering I use PUR minerals 4 in 1 compacts that can only be bought at ULTA stores. They aren’t cheap but if I bought the four products separately they would cost at least that much. It also saves me time of having to purchase and then apply four different products. There are a few things I will pay full price for (even though I try not to) and this is one of them. 🙂

How to get Two Gallons of Milk for the Price of One Forever- Doubling Milk

Before

After

One grocery item that is almost impossible to buy with coupons is a gallon of regular milk. My boyfriend drinks a lot of milk so we always keep it in the house. The cheapest place that I have been able to buy it is at Aldi but it is still over $2.50 and it usually expires quickly.  But what could we do except buy it anyway? Or so I thought.

Tonight, I came across an article that shows how to turn one gallon of milk into two by adding equal parts milk and water. A crazy idea right? But maybe not. Skim milk tastes watered down to me anyway. Have we simply stumbled on what milk companies have been doing all along?

I tried this last night and it worked! It tasted exactly like skim milk to me. Actually, it tastes better because I believe skim milk also removes some of the fat content. If you don’t like the 1/2 and 1/2 mix try doing 3/4 milk and 1/4 water.

This is a saving money tip that I have never heard of before. It’s little unusual ideas like this that can really add up. If we pay $3 a gallon for milk (on the cheap side) four times a month (most families buy more) that’s $12. If we can cut that in half that’s $6 savings per month or $72 dollars a year that I can spend on something else. And this takes less than 5 minutes to do. People working for minimum wage will work for half an hour to buy a gallon of milk. Your savings rate per hour here is at least $36 an hour.

EDIT- I would link you to the original article but the site no longer exists.

Our Own Domain Name!

This is the official first post directly onto www.shopaholicsavers.com ! Shopaholic Savers now officially has its own domain name and host site. This is very exciting to me and also a little intimidating because the software is a little different as well. I ask for everyone’s patience as I start figuring this out but also keep checking back because there will be big changes coming daily.

Thank you to all of our readers for their support!

Free Graph Paper

Students know that many Math classes require graph paper. Through part of high school and my entire college career I avoided buying it by printing it free off of the internet instead. I used PrintFreeGraphPaper.com but I’m sure there are others out there.

Publix

At Publix I got a lot of great deals. I looked at the weekly sales and both the yellow and green coupon booklets that are currently out. I did a lot of deals and also bought a few things that we needed even though there weren’t coupons for them. It has been a long time since I have done a large couponing trip for groceries. Those tend to be the most time consuming because there are the most items. After the results I had I know why I should do them more often.

Spent- $34.53

Saved- $65.94

To see the coupon match ups for any of the Publix deals I did please visit

In one day I saved $136.42. Not bad at all.
