9-18-18 Thrift Finds- Disney Lost and Found Items and More

My local thrift shop gets Disney lost and found items every few months. I never know exactly when they will be getting the stuff in (they don’t know either) so when I walked in last Thursday and the store was full of Disney stuff I had fun doing some early Christmas shopping for my family. At least one item has been left out of the pictures so that someone won’t glimpse their Christmas gift early! Of the items above, the most expensive were the R2D2 Mickey Mouse ears for $4 each.

My father has an electric litter box and accessories are expensive but I found some for him for a few dollars at the thrift shop. I also purchased some citronella candles for our hurricane supplies and some other random items.

I was able to buy some little things for the nephews, a Star Trek Enterprise ship for my office at the college, a couple of vintage Nestle coffee mugs and some really pretty reusable napkins.

I found the above baby Buddha, hand towels, Pedi Paws, fans, loafer, and bag of sand toys for $2 or less each. The fans are for Hurricane season, the V.S. blanket is either for a Christmas gift or to sell, and the bag of pool toys and snorkel are for the nephews and our next beach trip.

I also got lucky with some clothes and a blow up cruise ship and a light cover. I especially like the chameleon dress for teaching. The Victoria Secret bra is to sell on Poshmark because they sell well.

End of Summer 2018 Thrift Finds- Suitcases and More

We didn’t realize until our last trips that our suitcase collection had been reduced beyond usefulness. We often give them to relatives and had to throw some away after breaking from age/use. So when we found this 3 piece matching set for $20 at the thrift shop (usually over $100) we bought them right away. I still need to find a couple of rolling suitcases that will fit in ever shrinking overhead bins on flights.

For less than $1 each we also bought some items for our nephews and a $2 NIB Slip and Slide. We couldn’t pass up the U.S. divers mask and snorkel for $2 because on our last cruise if we had owned a set or 2 we would have used them off of some of the islands we visited.

I really needed a new pair of sandals to replace a few that had broken at the end of the summer. Unfortunately, a couple of these pairs didn’t quite fit but a couple did. For $1, I can’t get upset either way but I have learned my lesson that if I’m buying shoes for myself and not to resell I should try them on. Note- I know some people are squeamish about thrifted shoes but I have been wearing them my entire life and have never had any kind of reaction.

I was pleased with finding some dressed and sweaters for less than $2 each.

This picture is showing the items I bought to sell on Poshmark and eBay including a Victoria’s Secret hoodie, Chicos skirt and hippie vest. All less than $2 each.

Other small items I bought.

Can’t pass up a less than $1 Peppa Pig for the nephews.

These video game art books caught my eye and I took a moment to look them up and sure enough they sell for decent prices on eBay. Now if only I can find the time to list them.

B found this brand new in box keyboard for $2.

I also bought these fun shower curtains for my mother for about $1 each.

9-27-18 A Few Frugal Things- Wedding and Start of Fall Semester

Our last weekend of the summer was spent out of state at a wedding and then Fall Semester has started. The wedding was in a beautiful state park and the happy couple looked beautiful. We got to spend time with family and make it home in time for a brand new semester.

A few frugal things

– We purchased our plane tickets ASAP after hearing that we needed to fly to this wedding. We only spent $333 for 2 round trip tickets including bags and seats. Our flight went through a plane change so we actually were refunded about $20 as well.

– Going out of state for a wedding the weekend before Fall Semester starts was not ideal timing but the trip itself was not as expensive as it could have been. B’s mother and partner paid for our shared Air B&B and rental car. We pitched in for groceries but overall did not have to pay for much while we were there.

– We bought enough groceries at ALDI that we could get through the first weeks of school.

– I brought my lunch on the days that I work on campus long enough to need a lunch. I got a cheap McDonalds lunch (which I love) on the day I had back to back meetings and they fed us dinner and drinks which was great.

– I continue to carry around my stainless-steel water bottle everywhere. This not only saves me money but encourages me to drink more because it stays cold.

– I continue to wear thrifted clothing to teach as a college professor. I try to set a good example for my students in more than one way.

– B has been cooking healthy dinners and we have both lost the weight we gained on the cruise.

– We watched my brothers dogs over the weekend when he was out of town. They are adorable. This was frugal for him and a little bit of gas for us.

– We have had some great finds at the thrift store lately. Including new to us luggage that we needed with the amount of travel we do. We got a set of 3 for $20. We had broken or given away most of our luggage and what remained was not entirely the size we needed.

– I continue to make our dirt cheap, no cooking, 4 ingredients in a bowl and mix laundry detergent.

– Spent time over the weekend swimming in the pool, walking around the mall, working and cleaning the garage. None of those things cost us any money. It feels great to be going back to work Monday with everything that needed to be taken care of at home done and ready to take on the work week.

– Declined several invitations this week for activities that would have been quite expensive. If they were things we had really wanted to do we would have done them but sometime the ability to politely say no is a huge savings.

– We continue to buy our groceries from ALDI and Dollar Tree and then only make a small trip to Walmart/Publix.

– B tried to buy the cats more natural aka healthier food but they absolutely refused to eat it. Back to the cheap, gigantic bag of food from ALDI.

Not so Frugal

– We finally found a great pet sitter who will come to the house or take the puppy to hers but it’s not cheap.

– Our flight was delayed and I ended up buying a $12 airport sandwich. It was a good one but really! We brought snacks but not for as long as we were stuck there.

– We did have to purchase more pet flea medicine. It’s never cheap but it’s cheaper than a flea infestation.

– We are having family and friends over for dinner and are going to treat everyone for pizza. We are going with a family owned local place. It’s not cheap but they did send us a $10 off coupon. Like I said it’s not cheap but it’s very worthwhile.

– Paid to renew this website. I could save money by moving it but I just don’t have the time yet. This site does pay for itself so it’s worth it but it is a chunk of change every year to keep it.

– I think my laptop is starting to die. I need to shop for and buy another one but it’s such a huge commitment so to speak that I hope I have a bit more time for it.

Extra Income

– I listed so many items for sale on eBay and Poshmark at the start of summer that I have continued to have steady sales. B had to step in and help get everything packed and shipped after our trip.

– I’ve started a new side job and so far it’s been a mess but they are paying me well enough that it’s worth it to deal with it. I just keep saying that I’ve done worse for less LOL

– We continue to get ready to have a garage sale and get rid of junk. We are waiting until our neighborhood sale in November and we will have a ton of things to sell. Whatever doesn’t sell will get donated to the local thrift shop that fights homelessness.

– I haven’t been able to get any new items listed for sale online since the semester started back but I have slowly been getting more organized which hopefully means I will have more time to list stuff next weekend.

Sustainability Living (Eco Friendly, Harmful Chemical Free, Reduced Waste, etc.)

– I am grateful that we have switched so many household items from disposable to reusable (coffee filter, paper towels, napkins, plastic bags, etc.).  You never have to worry about running out!

– I used up some old green cleaners while cleaning and also used water and rags.

– I organized a rescue to come try to catch the kittens running around campus and get them fixed and vetted for free. They haven’t had any luck catching them yet but at least we are trying rather than ignoring the situation.

– We made two fresh batches of our Dirt-Cheap laundry detergent.

– I use recycled packaging to mail out the items I ship online. I save Amazon boxes and envelopes, tissue paper, bubble wrap etc. I keep a nice stash and then try to recycle or pass on the rest. Unfortunately, I still end up with more than I can use.

– My students will be giving demonstration speeches. Many of their topics involve cooking and small craft projects. I don’t allow them to be wasteful so we usually end up with some snack and small gadgets.

– The puppy is only allowed to have unsalted green beans and organic baby carrots for treats. It’s healthy for him and cheaper for us.

Ulta Revolution Makeup Palette Clearance $3.49

I was having brunch with a friend today and I thought she was wearing Urban Decay sin eyeshadow but it turns out that she was using this dupe. The revolution Redemption eyeshadow palette iconic 3 is currently on clearance for $3.49 which I found out when I went right away to buy it. This is a great deal and as I said, an Urban Decay sin dupe. Considering the Urban Decay version cost $18 for one single eyeshadow, this is a great deal. I bought six to use as Christmas presents and I was able to use a $3.50 off $15 coupon that Ulta always offers. So for the same price as one single eyeshadow, I got 6 palettes.

You might be able to use this deal online as well.

7-31-18 Thrift Finds- Jeans and Legos

I also got this giant bag of Legos which had a lot of Star Wars guys in it. It’s already listed on eBay here.

EDIT: These Legos sold on eBay for $33 including shipping. I could have gotten more if I broke up the set but I didn’t have time.

I had really great luck this trip with Lucky brand jeans and True Religion jeans for $2.50 each! Some were our size and some are to sell.

I also got a lunch box, a rolling bag for $4, and some small stuff that will be Christmas gifts including a Lego H&M super hero hat for my nephew. I go through so many professor rolling bags because most are made so that you can’t replace the wheels and the wheels wear out long before the rest of the bag. This bag, you can replace the wheels but the material is already fraying! Someday I will find a bag that lasts longer!

When I am thrifting I always keep my eyes open for like new rugs and towels and this trip I got lucky. I got two matching towels and rugs that didn’t seem like they had ever been used. The towels are super thick and a nice brand and the rugs are memory foam and we have already been using the rugs in the kitchen. They are nicely padded for our feet over our tile floor. Unfortunately, this dark color shows lots of dust and pet hair.

The candle holders match our living room but I haven’t decided where to put them yet. Our house has a lot of really nice accessories that were all dirt cheap from the thrift shop. I love the boho dress in the middle and the shoes were $1 a pair for Vans and Toms and are already listed on Poshmark.

Update- The Floral Vans sold for $22+ shipping on Poshmark and the lace Toms sold for $25 + shipping.

Install the free Poshmark app now! https://bnc.lt/focc/U4Rli43x3O Sign up with code NELISEY to get $5 off your first order!

I also purchased a pair of gap jeans and black Express for $2.50 each, one pair for me and one for B. I got a new in package apron from Ikea. I have been wanting an apron and it came with a funny pillsbury dough boy type hat. I also got a Nintendo handheld thing for $2.50. Also a stack of hats for summer. Also a book for my nephew and a set of 6 matching curtains for my mother who needed a set for her front window. The beware of dog sign is a joke. Oh and I also got a new in package set of stainless steel straws.

7-27-18 Thrift Finds- Clothes and Bookshelves

Some smaller finds this week. I found a really nice rug ( don’t mind the blurry picture) and some cute clothes. All less than $2 each

Update- The above Reebok sneakers sold for $27+ shipping on Poshmark.

Shoes were $1 each and I also got some small Christmas stuff.

I bought the above hoodie and overalls for $2 and $2.50 each to sell but when I got home I realized that neither had size tags. My brother got a nice hoodie and I’m still trying to figure out what to do with the overalls.

Update- The above overalls sold for $28+ shipping on Poshmark even without the tag and my brother wears the hoodie all the time.

The books on the left were free and I will give them to my nephew for Christmas. I bought butterfly pics for the guest bedroom, brand new socks for B, and a wooden cover journal for my aunt.

All small stuff $2 or less. A battery operated lamp for hurricane season. A ladle and new shot glasses because we needed them for the kitchen AND a laser toy for the cats and puppy. Unfortunately, the laser moves too fast for them to chase it but I might try attaching a toy to the top LOL

This pic is horrible but these two matching, solid wood bookshelves were a steal. They originally wanted $55 each for them but it was half off day and I had a 10% off coupon. I even paid $35 to have them delivered and it was still a great deal! Now to unpack our books that haven’t been unpacked since we moved a year ago!

7-9-18 A Few Frugal Things- Bridal Shower and Boat

We have had a busy couple of weekends. Last weekend we hosted a wedding shower for a close family member and this weekend we spent on a friend’s boat. It has been so much fun and actually very frugal.

A few frugal things

– The wedding shower went very well. Although lots of cleaning and decorating of the house was involved it was very little expense on our part. I did buy a large wall picture for $14.99 from Goodwill and a rug from Home Depot but we had everything else we needed to make the house presentable.

– As a gift for hosting the shower we were taken out to eat, bought lovely gifts and bought coffee. We also ended up with a ton of leftover food including a Publix cheese tray, a Publix veggie tray, desserts and a pasta, garlic knot and salad dinner from a local Italian restaurant.

– I gave my MIL and SIL lots of extra clothes that I either decided I didn’t have time to list for my online selling business or were going to yard saled. They were really happy with the clothes and I was happy they will use them and I will get rid of clutter. We also gave them some smaller items we weren’t using including a pet fountain, a makeup pallet, a small bird cage and a cooler.

– I got a couple of matching, gorgeous, dark wood bookshelves from the thrift shop. Originally they were listed for over $100 but it was half off day and I had a coupon. Even with paying $35 for delivery they were a steal. Several of our bookshelves broke the last time we moved so our books are still in boxes in the garage.

– The next week after the shower was 4th of July but B had a huge test the next day so we stayed in and got some stuff done. It was still a nice day and not expensive.

– The next weekend we spent Saturday out on our friend’s boat at a local Spring. It was a beautiful day on the water. We also got some great exercise going up and down the spring. We brought food and drinks with us so very little expense involved.

– On Sunday we went to the farmer’s market. We brought the puppy and he did really well with the other dogs. We got lots of food from local venders but didn’t purchase any nick nacks. It’s unfortunately not a farmer’s market that sells many vegetables but we still have a lot of those in the fridge.

– We have been enjoying our pool and patio. It’s 1,000 degrees in Florida right now so cooling off is really nice.

– Randomly ended up going to lunch, the thrift shop and mall with a friend on Friday. I got several errands completed including buying a dress and shoes for the upcoming family wedding, returning a dress I was never going to wear, and giving that friend a few things I had collected for her.

– Still enjoying watching The Handmaid’s Tale and Naked and Afraid XL streaming online.

– Watched a movie at home that we had wanted to see in the theatre but waiting until we could watch more comfortably and for free at home.

– These were some really fun weekends without spending much.

Not so Frugal

– I bought a couple pairs of cute high heels for the coming family wedding but they were on sale and I used a coupon so overall, I have zero guilt with this purchase.

Extra Income

– Still in the hiring process for small side jobs.

– Did sell a few things on Poshmark.

– Earned a $50 reward card from my Credit Card that I use to buy gas

Harmful Chemical Free and Reduced Waste Living

– My early composting efforts seem to be going well. It looks like real soil.

– I replanted some of my container vegetable garden and added organic soil. My small plants don’t produce much but they aren’t a huge time or money expense either for a hobby. I just think I need more plants. I would like to go to a local plant nursery to buy some. There is one in my home town but it’s 40 mins away.

6-3-18 A Few Frugal Things

We bought a flushing robot litter box. No more scooping poop for us! That thing is amazing! You do have to buy sanitizer solution about once a month for $20 but that is actually less than we currently spend on litter. While the initial purchase wasn’t cheap it was cheaper than a lot of robotic litter boxes, will save us money on litter over time and saves my sanity for having to clean a disgusting litter box every day because we have 3 cats. (One of the cute cats pictured below)

A few frugal things

– We are renewing our lease at the end of the month and they wanted to raise our rent by $30 a month. It’s not a huge amount of money but over a year it adds up. B called our landlord and asked if he wouldn’t raise our rent and he said YES!!!!!!!!!!!! $360 saved in one phone call!

– Instead of going out to dinner for B’s birthday we grilled steak at home. We did go out to lunch a couple times over the 3 day weekend but it was still cheaper than an expensive dinner

– B wants new glasses as his birthday present, this is frugal because it’s money that has to be spend anyways versus useless junk

– Looks like we have a couple of tomatoes that are almost ripe in the vegetable garden.

– We had baked potatoes for dinner. It’s an easy and cheap meal and we like it.

– I remembered to refill a 3 month prescription before it expired. The pharmacy kindly reminded me to fill it as early as I possibly could so that I wouldn’t miss 3 months of medicine.

– We got our first pepper and tomato from our veggie garden! Hardly a meal yet but it’s exciting.

– Still going to my Friday class. It’s an hour away so I am still carpooling with a new friend I met the first day who lives 5 mins away. They also give us a lot of nice snacks including bags of chips and bananas and cookies.

– When we arrived at class this week the light had come on for low tire air pressure. I keep a small electric air pump in the car for just such occasions. When I added air to the tire I could see that there was a split in the side. I called the local branch of the tire place 3 out of 4 of my tires came from and they were able to order a matching 4th tire by the time I was out of class. I got a new tire and this time I sprung for the $52 insurance on all of the tires that will cover this type of accident going forward. I have been known to hit a curb or two.

– Deep cleaned the house and outside patio area. Good exercise and I didn’t have to buy anything to do it. I love having an extremely clean house! Good for my mental health and allergies! It is a good reminder that I don’t need to buy much, besides kitchen rugs, to host a huge family party.

– I made dinner using a cabbage that was going to go bad. We weren’t so lucky with the head of lettuce but it got added to the compost so it will become food for future veggie garden crops.

– I went shopping with my friend and her mom. Had a lot of fun but I didn’t end up buying anything except lunch. We got hibachi at the local (and very nice) mall. I love the food and they enjoyed it too.

– Gave my father our old robot litter box (new costs about $85) and the extra pet fountain I bought at the thrift shop. He helps us with a lot of small household stuff because he is super handy and I always appreciate it!

– We are dealing with a family emergency and had to buy two plane tickets and go out of town unexpectedly. That part is not frugal but the timing worked out because I am already off of work and we were able to get perfect flights at a discount airline and they were less than half the price of all of the other airlines.

– We are able to watch my favorite survival show Naked and Afraid XL free live by using my father’s cable login

Not so Frugal

– The radiator went in B’s car and a while it was in the shop a few other things needed to be done and $370 later his car is drivable again

– Paying for a new tire unexpectedly

– We agreed to host a family party at our house. Another relative is paying for it but I’m sure there will be costs associated that we haven’t thought of yet.

– We rearranged our schedule and drove over half an hour to look at a farm in our ideal neighborhood. When we got there our realtor never showed up or answered his phone. His wife is claiming a minor medical emergency. I don’t know what to believe.

– The current high cost of gas thanks to you know who of the big tower

Extra Income

– I have had some really awesome thrift finds and rummage sale finds that should be solid sales on eBay or Poshmark

– I sold a few small things online on Poshmark and eBay

– I also have done some small online work and will do more if it comes my way.

– I should be getting paid soon for taking a summer faculty development class

– I have almost earned enough through Swagbucks for another $25 gift card

– I almost have enough credit card points for a $50 VISA gift card

Harmful Chemical Free and Reduced Waste Living

– The thrifted steam mop heads arrived from Amazon and that thing is AMAZING! Just in time because we agreed to host a family event at the house.

– Cleaned the whole house using the steamer, broom, vacuum, water, rubbing alcohol and rags but zero harsh chemicals

5-31-18 Rummage Sale Finds- Coats, Coats, Coats!!!

UPDATE- I paid $40 for 4 giant bags of stuff at that rummage sale, already sold 1 pair overalls for $38, now these for $45, I have the 3rd pair of overalls listed AND I am currently using 8 other items I got in my house, and I have a bunch more to list from that sale including the ann klein coats!!!! I frickin LOVE thrifting!!!!

I had way, way too much fun at a local church rummage sale on a Wednesday of all days! It was the first day of the sale and there was so much stuff! The above pictures are of the sale! I didn’t arrive until about an hour before they closed when I saw a sign on the side of the road on my way home so I didn’t want to stop shopping long enough to take better pictures.

Everything I bought fit into these 3 XL reusable bags. They threw in the bags just for free.

The above photo shows some of the small stuff I bought including 2 giant candles, a pottery barn tray, etc. Most items were $1 each.

The above vintage coat is amazing! I love it but I will probably sell it but it definitely needs to be dry cleaned but I think it will be worth it.

The above is a London Fog coat for $2 to resell.

The above is a another amazing coat for $2 to resell. The fur is fake. I love animals.

The above are Anne Klein full length, 100% wool coats for $2 to resell. All of the coats I hope will sell for $40 to $100 each online.

Above are 3 pairs of overalls including one pair of Carhartts that were $2 each and are already listed for sale on Poshmark for about $40 each.

EDIT: The middle pair of overalls sold for $45 + shipping and the 3rd pair sold for $38 + shipping.

The puppy was excited about his new blanket! How he always knows exactly what I have bought for him is a mystery.

These Bobs and Toms shoes were $2 each. I should have passed on these for resale but oh well. Not every item is a winner.
