One Last Day for Canned Chicken Deal at Publix

I had just bought 2 cans of canned chicken the day before they went on sale B1G1 Free and I spent around $6. So after kicking myself, the next day when they were BOGO I wanted to come up with a really good deal. We use canned chicken for some easy meals in place of other meats and I hate how much it usually costs. Unfortunately, I didn’t get the $1 off 1 coupon that some people got in the SS 1/08 and also the cans were $3.49 which wasn’t as cheap as a lot of people were finding them. But I still came up with a deal to stock up at a really good price! This is what I did-

Bought 16 cans of B1G1 Free Valley Fresh White Chicken, in water, 97% fat free, 12.5 oz, at $3.49
– Used 8 $1/2 off Valley Fresh Natural Chicken Breast, SS 1/08
– and used 1 $5 off of a $25 purchase Save-A-Lot competitor printable coupon HERE
Spent- $14.92 total or .93¢ a can (These cans would have normally cost $55.84 total)
Saved- $40.92

I would have posted this deal earlier but I’ve been really sick. Even though I know it’s too late for most of you to do this deal I still wanted to post it because you could do a very similar deal on an item that you need to stock up on.

1-18-12 Frugal Reflections- Being Sick and Dishwashers

When you’re sick, it makes it so much harder to get anything done! Almost my entire family is sick right now. Not just with colds. I have a sinus infection and two ear infections and my boyfriend is really sick as well. For the first few sick days we threw our hands up and gave up on any housework and focused on getting better. Now that antibiotics have kicked in and I have a small amount of energy I am determined to start doing small things that need to get done.

I looked at the couponing drug store deals for this week and I decided that there wasn’t anything I really needed. I was excited last week to get to stock up on some household items and especially dishwasher detergent.

We do use our dishwasher for several reasons-

1. I have researched and read that using a newer energy efficient dishwasher can actually save electricity and water over hand washing.

2. I prefer to have anything that will come in contact with food be as sanitary as possible so when I hand wash dishes I use a lot of hot water and soap. We are lucky not to need to do almost any prewashing of dishes so that also assures me that my dishwasher saves time, energy and water.

3. We all know the saying that “time is money” and considering 1. and 2. I greatly enjoy the time my dishwasher saves me.

Frugal Things This Week-

1. Staying out of stores as much as possible due to being sick always means less opportunity to spend money

2. Choosing not to coupon as drug stores this week because I didn’t really need anything

3. Making up a huge batch of Spaghetti (one of my comfort foods) mostly from stuff we had in the house at the beginning of the week so that we had easily available food to eat and would be less tempted to eat out

What Exactly are CVS Cash Cards?

Last week, I earned my first CVS cash card. CVS is promoting these like crazy and they just switched over from using gift cards to cash cards on their spend $30 (before coupons of course) and receive a card deals that they have been doing. So I asked a cashier- what exactly are CVS cash cards? He informed me that they are like gift cards but you can use them on anything that you could spend cash on in the store including prescriptions, stamps and alcohol.

This makes them better than gift cards!

I am still not willing to buy things that I don’t want or need in order to earn one but it does make them a better incentive if I find a deal that I want to do that lines up with a cash card deal.

DIY- Make Your Own Taco Seasoning

I recently tried making my own taco seasoning. It was really good and indistinguishable from the store seasoning packets. I had fun making it and I stored it in an old salsa jar. I’m still a little unsure of any savings over buying taco seasoning packets for cheap with coupons but I did already have most of the ingredients needed. The recipe is as follows-

1/4 cup chili powder
1 1/2 tsp onion powder
1 1/2 tsp garlic powder
1 1/2 tsp cumin
1 1/2 tsp oregano
1/2 tsp paprika
1 tsp salt
1 tsp pepper

Mix all the ingredients above in a small bowl. To use substitute 2 rounded Tablespoons for 1 packet of taco seasoning.

Thanks, Smashed Peas and Carrots for the recipe.

What should you do with the Cruched Chips at the Bottom of the Bag?

Ever wonder what to do with the crunched chips at the bottom of the chip bag? I’ll tell you what we use them for. I worked at Chili’s for years and people pay a lot of money for salads garnished with what amounts to fancy chip pieces. At home, I used crunched chips as salad toppers. It’s a cheap and easy alternative to croutons and you are using something you might otherwise throw away.

Record What You Spend and File Receipts

Join me in 2012 in recording what you spend and save. I use the above planner to write down every cent I spend and then next to it I write what I’ve saved. It’s fun to see what your totals are and I am planning to do this for an entire year.

I also use a small pendaflex, like the one in the picture above, with a section for each month to file and save my receipts. It makes it really easy to find a receipt if I need it for a return or a missed coupon.
