Who Needs Gladware?

image

When I cook I often make too much food. Sometimes I make large batches of food to share with family or friends. Recently I decided to wash a few empty plastic food containers to use to send leftovers home with my mother. This is something she used to do for me when she would send food back with me to my college dorm room. Following her lead, I used to keep a few of these in the cabinet to use when we needed them or to give away with food and not worry about getting back. I have gotten away from this but I think I should start doing it again. They are plastic that is already in the environment. I figure it is better to reuse them than to buy plastic containers and create a profit for companies that put more plastic into the environment. It’s another use for these containers before they get recycled.

As someone wise once said, I don’t understand why our society has created something that lasts forever and then called it disposable. It just doesn’t make sense. Also, as soon as we can find some good deals we plan on investing in more glass food storage containers that can go in lunch boxes and be heated up without fear of chemicals leaching into our food. I have already replaced most of our plastic bowls and plates with glass or ceramic ones.

Great Thrift Shop Finds $1 DVD Player B1G1 TVs and More

I went Thrift Shopping with my Mom recently and we had some really great finds. Here are some of them below.

This DVD player with it’s remote was only $1!

These two TVs were marked $15 each but they were on sale for B1G1 Free. They even lowered the price to $10 for 2. I didn’t need 2 TVs but they wouldn’t sell me one for $5. So two TVs it was. I’m going to give away the 2nd one or yard sale it.

I got this box of books for $1. Some are for us to read and some are to sell/trade.

We also filled this bag for $2 with all sorts of random stuff including clothes and kitchen items.

I grew up thrift shopping with my mother and it has saved me thousands of dollars over the years. I love knowing that I am being eco-friendly by preventing useful things from ending up in landfills. I also love knowing that the money goes to the great causes such as Habitat for Humanity and Salvation Army that run the shops.

Organic/Natural Deals- Cheap Tom’s of Maine Products at Big Lots

My local Big Lots Close Out Store currently has some great Tom’s of Maine Natural products in stock. The have Tom’s of Maine adult toothpaste, kid’s toothpaste, dental floss and mouthwash at close out prices. I believe that almost all of these items are priced at $2.50.

The above chart shows some information about Tom’s of Maine products. These are all things that I want my money to support when purchasing products.

Getting The Most For Your Money- Good to the Last Drop

It often amazes me how much product is left in many manufacturer bottles when they are “empty.” Today I “emptied” this bottle of dish soap into a hand pump dispenser. It looked empty and I bet many people would have tossed it straight into the trash, but I hate to waste and so I turned it upside-down. In a short amount of time, enough soap for more than a week had collected in the bottom.

When I moved into my current apartment, I moved my couponer’s stash of new household products before I was actually living in the apartment. A couple of days before we officially moved, I ran out of conditioner at my old apartment and didn’t think it was worth the drive to go get a new one at my new apartment (and of course it wouldn’t make sense to buy a new one when I had a stash already). So I simply cut open the bottle (that I couldn’t squeeze anything more out of) and *surprise* I had more than enough conditioner until we moved.

Now, I always cut open bottles and tubes before I toss them or add a small amount of water and shake them up. This is beneficial for my wallet and the environment and waste is not. I am shocked that sometimes I get more than a week’s worth of different products this way. Over a year or ten this could really add up. It could also save you from having to make an emergency trip to the store because you are “out” of something.

I’m not a conspiracy theorist but it seems a little too convenient that some companies who want you to buy more of product X are completely unaware that their products seem empty when there are still 4 of the promised 12 ounces left in the container. I made up those numbers but the results are visible. My mother has been doing this for years. I have to ask myself why I wasn’t?

Publix Christmas Clearance

My sister and I went to Publix to go grocery shopping yesterday and we couldn’t help looking at the Publix Christmas clearance. They had a lot of candy and some decorations on sale. My favorite find was several types of Publix Christmas reusable gift bags. These gift bags can be reused over and over again and they only cost .50 cents, which is a lot cheaper than most paper gift bags that rip easily. My family already had a very eco-friendly Christmas this year as far as wrapping went. We used comics, store bags, reused gift bags and recyclable wrapping paper. We also like to give out gift bags (usually full of items we get for free couponing) and these .50 cent bags are also perfect for that.
