How We Got a 46 inch Flat Screen TV for $149

Yesterday we had an extremely frugal day! Since we moved into our new house several months ago we have bought very little. My boyfriend and I both agreed that we wanted a flat screen TV but we also didn’t want to spend frivolously when we have other tube TVs in the house that work just fine.

When we moved into the new house and signed up for AT&T U-verse, which included a great introductory special, they unexpectedly gave us $150 in Visa gift cards just for signing up. I had also been saving $200 in Visa gift cards that I had received as a bonus from my old job.

Which TV to buy? We looked for months and decided that we were willing to each pay a little more out of pocket to get a better (aka bigger) TV. My boyfriend found the one we wanted at Best Buy online for $499. The downside was that we had to drive about a half an hour to get it from by where we used to live. The good thing was that even though it cost more in the store they price matched it for us to the cheaper online price.

On the way, I was able to stop at a book store that doesn’t have a branch by where we live and sell 3 books I no longer wanted from my huge library for $22 cash.

I was also able to redeem a couple of coupons for free items at stores in the Best Buy plaza that I had been holding onto since before we moved. We got a free caramel apple at Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory and we got a free gourmet cupcake at Sweet.

After getting back in town we went to the County Fair for the last night of fun, rides and shows. A close relative of mine is one of the managers so we were able to attend for free! We also got free ride bracelets. Yes, that is a picture of a tiger jumping through a flaming hoop! We brought the free candy apple with us to save on food cost and no one knew that we hadn’t purchased it there.

After the fair, we went to Target and met up with a relative who bought some of the cables we needed for the new TV with their employee discount. So we were even able to get the TV cables 15% off.

After that, we went home to play with and watch our new TV. For us it is a good investment because we love being at home watching movies and playing games. This TV allows us to connect our computers to the TV so that we can watch free streaming internet movies and TV shows on a large screen. It’s always more frugal to stay home than to go out so I feel that investing in your home is a great idea and luckily we love being at home. 🙂

Saving Money On Drinking Water- Water Vending Machines

I have written before on the pros and cons of Having A Water Well which for us means that we have to buy drinking water. Before we were paying about .75¢ for a gallon for drinking water at the various grocery stores we shop at. Now I have rediscovered the Water Vending Machines outside grocery stores (near us Publix has them). For .30¢ a gallon I can fill up my water jugs and save more than 50% of what I had been paying for water. For us the .45¢ I’ll save a gallon will really add up because we buy so much water.

I love that I have been able to save 50% of what we used to pay for milk and now I’m saving 50% of what I used to pay for water. Maybe my goal should be to save 50% on everything!

Storage Wars- My Experience At A Storage Auction

I know that many of us are huge fans of the show Storage Wars. Could it really be that easy to buy and sell storage lockers? My uncle who buys storage lockers was in town and took me to an actual storage auction where we bought a unit.

Homemade Weed Killer

This is the first time since I was a child that I have lived in a house. Something we considered when renting our house was the lawn care but we still wanted our own lawn. My boyfriend mows our decent sized lawn so I decided that it was up to me to pull the weeds out of the sidewalk cracks and mulch flower beds.

However, we have hundreds of clovers mixed in with the mulch. Instead of hand pulling each of them I decided to look up homemade weed killer.

After looking it up, I learned that salt and vinegar are the two main ingredients in homemade weed killer, both of which I already had in my cabinet. I took both of those and mixed them in a small reused spray bottle.

I sprayed it on the clovers today and it worked!

Thanks to The Garden Counselor for the information.

Making a Profit off of Publix Clearance

Remember my post about always looking out for stuff on clearance? Well I noticed these trial sized items on sale at Publix for change, went home and realized that I had coupons for them. Not only were some of these items free but I was paid overage to take them out of the store. That’s the way I like to shop!

Shopping With My Sister

Yesterday I got to go shopping with my sister which is always lots of fun. My sister is a shopaholic like no other. She loves to shop but she somehow always finds the most amazing deals so that she never spends much money.

We found these cute Almost Famous shorts at Sears for $2.99.

She also needed a birthday gift for her friend and we went to Bath & Body Works that was having Fall Clearance. She got almost $40 worth of stuff for $10.

At CVS, she needed some air fresheners so we the deal where if you spend $12 on select glade products you get $4 ECBs. After the coupons she used and the ECBs she received this ended up costing around $4. Not bad for something she needed to buy anyway.

At Publix, we got a few things she needed and it only cost about $2.

Shopping is always more fun when I get to go with my sister. We compare deals and we encourage each other to save. I definitely recommend having a shopping/saving buddy!

Why You Should Always Browse the Clearance Section

I was at my local Walgreens a couple days ago when I spotted a cart containing the stuff pictured above. I don’t generally carry a lot of coupons on me when I go shopping, mostly just the ones I hope to use. I still like to browse the clearance sections at stores to see if I see anything that I know I have coupons for at home. The problem was that I would often forget exactly what was there and the prices. Now that I have a smart phone (that I bought secondhand for really cheap by the way) I have started taking pictures so that I can go home and look up any coupons I might have.

You can find coupons that are available for any product by using free coupon databases on different websites. I most often use the coupon database on SouthernSavers.com. I did find some coupons that would have made some of this stuff even cheaper, but I didn’t find any coupons that would have made anything free or dirt cheap which is always my goal. I didn’t end up going back this time but I’m glad I looked because this is always a chance to get some free stuff.
