1-18-12 Frugal Reflections- Being Sick and Dishwashers

When you’re sick, it makes it so much harder to get anything done! Almost my entire family is sick right now. Not just with colds. I have a sinus infection and two ear infections and my boyfriend is really sick as well. For the first few sick days we threw our hands up and gave up on any housework and focused on getting better. Now that antibiotics have kicked in and I have a small amount of energy I am determined to start doing small things that need to get done.

I looked at the couponing drug store deals for this week and I decided that there wasn’t anything I really needed. I was excited last week to get to stock up on some household items and especially dishwasher detergent.

We do use our dishwasher for several reasons-

1. I have researched and read that using a newer energy efficient dishwasher can actually save electricity and water over hand washing.

2. I prefer to have anything that will come in contact with food be as sanitary as possible so when I hand wash dishes I use a lot of hot water and soap. We are lucky not to need to do almost any prewashing of dishes so that also assures me that my dishwasher saves time, energy and water.

3. We all know the saying that “time is money” and considering 1. and 2. I greatly enjoy the time my dishwasher saves me.

Frugal Things This Week-

1. Staying out of stores as much as possible due to being sick always means less opportunity to spend money

2. Choosing not to coupon as drug stores this week because I didn’t really need anything

3. Making up a huge batch of Spaghetti (one of my comfort foods) mostly from stuff we had in the house at the beginning of the week so that we had easily available food to eat and would be less tempted to eat out

2011 Christmas In Review

We did exceptionally well this Christmas! I’m very proud of my family and myself for the beautiful Christmas we had this year. Despite having a huge tree and a beautifully decorated house I didn’t spend a cent on decorations or wrapping. My mother had tons of both from years past and insisted on sharing now that I have my own house.

The above picture shows why I love using comics as wrapping! They also save you lots of cutting and money. If you are getting multiple newspapers ever Sunday I look at this as an added benefit. We used the free tape from HERE to wrap gifts. We are also saving bags and boxes from this year for next year.

I was asked by a friend to participate in buying gifts for the children at a local homeless shelter and feel very thankful for being able to take part in it. I chose the oldest teenagers because I figured most people would choose younger children. I love, love the gift bags we put together for them with fun and practical personal care items, etc. My sister and I even drove a half an hour to the Victoria Secret Outlet to buy tote bags for the girls for $1.99 each! Thanks to couponing I was able to do this while spending very little money. See the above picture of the items laid out on their bags.

I LOVE many of the practical gifts I got this year. The best way to surround yourself with things from the people you love is to have them buy you things you need and use. My brother bought me a cast iron skillet (we are trying to avoid Teflon), my father got me stainless steel pots (again, trying to avoid Teflon) with lids and best of all a buffet food warmer since my new favorite hobby is making dinner for lots of people. My mother got me a small suitcase for weekend trips and my boyfriend got me a huge roller board suitcase for when we make long trips. These were both great because we LOVE to travel. Traveling is one thing I feel it is very worthwhile spending money on. My aunt got me a sewing machine which I have been wanting for some projects that I know I can accomplish once I figure out how to use it. My sister got me some really great household and personal care products as well as lots of picture frames which I will use all through my house. My boyfriend also bought me my very own copy of THE TIGHTWAD GAZETTE!!!! (I wrote about it HERE). For those who don’t know, it is the frugal living bible. I am so excited. I read it when I got it from the library and wanted to buy my own copy for a year but I never expected to get it as a gift. I love rereading it and also being able to write in my own notes this time.

None of us went into any debt to buy any gifts, because we used so many frugal strategies. Including, using gift cards, shopping sales, giving free with coupon household items, shopping at dollar stores, and many other ideas you can see here (30 Ways to Save Money This Holiday Season).

We all ate and made tons of food which cost us very little after couponing and discounts and stocking up when there were good deals through the year. Now I have lots of leftovers that will save me from having to cook for days and I will probably still have some to freeze for later.

I bought an extra ham and turkey this holiday season with a steep employee discount from the place my mother works. I have kept them frozen and I hope that this will help offset some of our meat grocery costs in the coming year.

Right now, I feel like I never need to go shopping again! I have everything I need and can’t imagine needing anything else (at least not anything I can’t buy with the many gift cards I now have lol). I know this feeling won’t last long but I’m going to try to hold onto it because I am so lucky to be so blessed.

Our Frugal Christmas 2011

I know that it is hard to believe by looking at this picture but we had a very frugal Christmas that was also unbelievably fun. We used a lot of strategies to amass this huge pile of gifts while spending very little money (See 30 Ways to Save Money this Christmas).

Yesterday, I spent all day cooking and cleaning and getting ready to have my family over for Christmas at my house for the first time. We all gave and received many fun, useful and joyful gifts that we will treasure in our homes for years to come. More than anything, I feel thankful for the many blessings we have in our lives and the many people we have to love.

12-16-11 Frugal Reflections- Yard Sale, Hermit Crabs and Oranges

Today was an especially frugal day! I have been dumping stuff that I don’t want in my garage since the day we moved into our house and I finally had a yard sale. We had very few big ticket items, most of the items in my sale were priced at .25 cents. I didn’t spend a penny to have the sale. I advertised on Craig’s list and other yard sale websites, used hand me down or homemade signs and price tags that my family already had. I didn’t have a lot of expectations because I wasn’t sure how good our neighborhood was for yard sales since I had never had one here. I figured if I made a few dollars and got rid of some stuff that was good enough for me.

We actually made $44 and we were very happy with that! We also got rid of a lot of stuff both from the sale and from me cleaning /organizing the rest of the garage while we were having the sale. It was a fun day with my mom, we made a little money, met some nice people, got rid of some stuff and got a little exercise.

After the sale I finally set up our hermit crab, Jeffery’s new tank which has been sitting in the garage and he was sooo happy he climbed to the top of his new log. I had no idea hermit crabs liked to climb. I had bought the tank at a thrift store for CHEAP and used sand from our back yard (FREE) as well at some of his hermit crab sand.

Then we went in the backyard and picked oranges off of one of our trees. They are the ugly kind of Fl oranges that taste so sweet. There is nothing better than getting FREE fruit from our backyard. Overall, a busy fun and frugal day.

My Experience Buying a Locker at a Storage Auction!

With the popularity of shows such as Storage Wars and Auction Hunters many people have become curious, myself included, about Storage Auctions. Well it just so happens that I have an Uncle who buys storage lockers at auctions just like the ones you see on TV. He lives out of state but I have had several fun conversations with him about his finds. I can’t list his findings because it goes against the code of storage auction buyers which requires secrecy.  Let’s just say he has done very well.

Recently my uncle came to stay with me on vacation. He was interested to see the difference between Florida Auctions and the ones he usually goes to. He decided to take me to an auction. We got up early one morning and bought muffins from a gas station for breakfast. When we arrived at the Storage Center we parked and watched as the long line of cars, belonging to people attending the auction, grew. There were probably 30-50 people there to see the 6 lockers that were being auctioned that day. I didn’t bring any money and was just there as an observer but it was easy to see why it was exciting waiting to find out what was behind those steel doors.

What surprised me most was that you didn’t need a huge amount of money to buy storage lockers, even with the popularity of the show. The other thing that surprised me was that you could often see a lot of what was in the unit before you bought it. The TV shows make it seem like a lot of guess work and it is but certain lockers are higher risk than others. Boxes and containers that you can’t see through could hold stacks of dollar bills or trash. I also didn’t know that there were additional fees that you would have to pay when buying lockers such as the fee to the storage company and the holding fee to reserve the unit until you finish emptying the locker. Always call before an auction to find out about fees and also to make sure the auction has not been canceled because many people pay off their debt to the storage company at the last minute and the auction is canceled.

Of the six lockers we saw auctioned, one had a lot of furniture that looked like it belonged to a teenage girl, one was a huge record collection and a drum set, and one looked like building supplies. The last one had purses and clothes (see below).

It was at the last locker being auctioned that my uncle placed a bid twice and won the auction! I was surprised, thinking that we were only going to observe but I think he wanted me to have the full experience of buying a storage unit. I would be lying if I said it wasn’t really exciting opening the plastic storage boxes inside the locker. My uncle had intentionally bought a very small locker because we had to fit everything in his rental car with us. You aren’t allowed to throw anything away at the storage center.

After the auction we spoke with one of the other buyers who had actually found a brand new X-box in his unit that he had only paid $75 for. He was happy with some of his other finds and was willing to speak with us. My uncle warned me that many storage auction buyers are very secretive about their finds.

We used gloves to process the items and go through them more thoroughly, in my garage, throwing away any trash. Our locker had a lot of clothes, shoes, purses and household items. Unfortunately very little was in my size but I plan on trying to consign a lot of it. We didn’t find any dollar bills but we did find some coin change and we did find two bracelets that I’m still not sure if they are gold or not. My uncle and aunt warn that one of the biggest problems with buying storage lockers is storing and then getting rid of the items that you buy because they pile up fast. I still have almost all of the items from the locker we bought in my garage waiting until I have time for a yard sale and to make it to the consignment store.

I would love to go to another auction but until then I’ll enjoy watching the show and talking to my uncle and aunt about their experiences and the crazy and sometimes valuable things that they buy at storage auctions.

How We Got a 46 inch Flat Screen TV for $149

Yesterday we had an extremely frugal day! Since we moved into our new house several months ago we have bought very little. My boyfriend and I both agreed that we wanted a flat screen TV but we also didn’t want to spend frivolously when we have other tube TVs in the house that work just fine.

When we moved into the new house and signed up for AT&T U-verse, which included a great introductory special, they unexpectedly gave us $150 in Visa gift cards just for signing up. I had also been saving $200 in Visa gift cards that I had received as a bonus from my old job.

Which TV to buy? We looked for months and decided that we were willing to each pay a little more out of pocket to get a better (aka bigger) TV. My boyfriend found the one we wanted at Best Buy online for $499. The downside was that we had to drive about a half an hour to get it from by where we used to live. The good thing was that even though it cost more in the store they price matched it for us to the cheaper online price.

On the way, I was able to stop at a book store that doesn’t have a branch by where we live and sell 3 books I no longer wanted from my huge library for $22 cash.

I was also able to redeem a couple of coupons for free items at stores in the Best Buy plaza that I had been holding onto since before we moved. We got a free caramel apple at Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory and we got a free gourmet cupcake at Sweet.

After getting back in town we went to the County Fair for the last night of fun, rides and shows. A close relative of mine is one of the managers so we were able to attend for free! We also got free ride bracelets. Yes, that is a picture of a tiger jumping through a flaming hoop! We brought the free candy apple with us to save on food cost and no one knew that we hadn’t purchased it there.

After the fair, we went to Target and met up with a relative who bought some of the cables we needed for the new TV with their employee discount. So we were even able to get the TV cables 15% off.

After that, we went home to play with and watch our new TV. For us it is a good investment because we love being at home watching movies and playing games. This TV allows us to connect our computers to the TV so that we can watch free streaming internet movies and TV shows on a large screen. It’s always more frugal to stay home than to go out so I feel that investing in your home is a great idea and luckily we love being at home. 🙂

What to Do When You Run Out of Coffee Filters

Coffee should basically be considered a food group in our house. Although we don’t frequent Starbucks we do make coffee at home every day. This week we ran out of coffee filters just before going on vacation. Instead of running out to the closest convenient yet expensive store to buy some (and probably some other things we didn’t need) we waited couple days until we actually needed to go to the store. Did you know that you can use paper towels instead of coffee filters? It worked fine and we didn’t have to go without coffee (I’m sure the people around us are grateful).

Washington, D.C. Trip! – Free in D.C.

(This picture was taken at the WW2 Memorial in front of our home state)

This Thursday night 7 of us departed from Florida for a 14 hour road trip to visit our family who live by Washington, D.C.! We were very excited because several of our group had never seen D.C. before. We had an absolutely amazing time and our main regret is that we wish we could have stayed longer!

Why did we drive instead of flying? With 7 people going we decided that it would be cheaper to drive. Had we been able to find round trip plane tickets for $200 per person it would have cost us over $1400 to fly and that is a low estimate. Instead we spent $100 each, $700 total to cover the cost of renting a van, rental insurance, and gas. This was a savings of 50%. It also worked out well that we had a vehicle to drive while we were there because there were so many of us. The downside was the long drive, but we all slept for a huge portion of the trip and brought a small TV to which we attached our Xbox (which is also a DVD player) and that helped to pass the time.

For those of you who have never been to D.C. you may not know that many of the coolest things to do in Washington, DC are free! All of the monuments in DC are free and so are all of the Smithsonian museums. We visited the Washington monument, Lincoln’s memorial, the Vietnam War Memorial, the WW2 Memorial, what would have been the reflection pond had it not been under construction, The National Gallery of Art, The Air and Space Museum, The Natural History Museum, The National Sculpture Garden, and I’m sure I’m forgetting several others but none of which did we have to pay for. The Washington D.C. Zoo is also free but during this short trip we were unable to make it.

Among the highlights of our trip were going to the Andy Warhol exhibit, seeing a giant dead squid, the mammals exhibit, seeing all of the Artwork at the National Art Museum, riding on the Metro (D.C.’s subway) and spending time with our family. Below are some pictures we took during the trip.

( The Washington Monument from inside the WW2 Memorial )

( Outside the Lincoln Monument )

We also saved money by-

– choosing a slightly smaller but fuel efficient rental van

– packing as lightly as possible to fit in the van

– staying with family

– eating at our relative’s houses instead of going out to eat

– bringing our own drinks and snacks along the road trip and with us during day trips to DC

– having family who gave us tons of “souvenirs” to take back with us for our households

– driving whenever we could instead of taking public transportation

– taking pictures instead of buying tons of souvenirs

Overall, for all of you frugal people out there, Washington, D.C. has a lot of fun things you can do without spending a dime. Your main costs when considering a vacation there are going to be transportation, food, and a place to stay. We were able to keep those to a minimum. We probably also spent about another $250 for food while we were there but none of us ended up spending very much. None of this would have been possible without the generosity of our family who welcomed us with open arms, provided amazing food for our small army and gave us a place to stay that was hundreds of times better than a hotel. We had an amazing time and we all want to visit again soon.

Waking up to Cold Florida Air and Oranges

This morning, I woke up early even though it’s my day off. It’s hard to sleep in now that I have to get up at 6:30am every day for work. I was shocked at the cold weather when I ran outside in my PJs to get my Sunday newspapers. For those of you who don’t know I live in Florida and this is the first cold day of the year. I grabbed my boyfriend’s winter coat from the back closet and tiptoed into our backyard to take a picture of our Water Well for another post (see HERE).

I was so excited to see that our three orange / tangerine trees haves started to grow fruit. As a Florida child I grew up with orange and tangerine trees in the back yard. I have great memories of being a child and going out to pick oranges in the cold air. We usually had so many that we couldn’t even give them all away and that was only from one or two trees at a time.

I can’t wait to have baskets of fresh FREE fruit to eat or give away. In my experience Orange and Tangerine trees are really easy to take care of (plant them and that’s it!) and yield tons of fruit year after year. I think having a fruit tree is a great frugal venture. I may try to make homemade jam this year. Or we may simply be able to give baskets of oranges to friends and family as early Christmas presents.
