A Cool Use for Clearance Valentine’s Day Card Kits for Teachers

51ru+wFChXLI have always seen Valentine’s Day kits on clearance for less than $1 each at Goodwill or Target and I always wondered who would buy those. So when I saw my mother browsing them at Goodwill recently I asked her about it. She told me that the kits only cost .59¢ each and most of them came with a lot of nice pencils (like the one in the picture below) and stickers and other little gifts that were great for teachers (she is a substitute teacher). Especially in the area we live in, the schools have had major budget cuts and teachers have had to be creative with how they buy things for their classes. So for less than $1 teachers could possibly get little gifts or incentives for their students.

Make Your Own Natural/Organic Hand Soap with Only 2 Ingredients

soapwithtextcropIf you have been reading about my Natural/Organic adventures and deals HERE then you already know that I have been replacing the cleaning and personal care products in my house with Chemical Free options. I wanted to find a good alternative to our hand soap especially because I often have dry, cracked skin on my hands and wash them a lot. I ended up purchasing Dr. Bronner’s Pure Castile Soap which is made from olive oil and I did a little research on how to turn it into hand soap.

You Need-

– Dr. Bronner’s Castile Soap scent of your choice

– 1 Empty Foaming Hand Soap Pump – $1 at Dollar Tree (I gave away the soap and kept the bottle)

– Water

Hand Soap Recipe-

– 1/8 Parts Dr. Bronner’s Castile Soap

– 7/8 Parts Water

*This isn’t an exact recipe so I don’t measure, I simply eyeball it*

– Mix it in a foaming hand soap pump. This part is important because if you use a regular soap pump like I did at first it’s really runny and you will use more. However, it makes a great foaming hand soap.

It’s that easy!

You do have the option of adding an essential oil for a different scent but I like the way the Almond Dr. Bronner’s soap smells so I don’t find that necessary. You can also add Tea Tree Oil to make the soap antibacterial but we didn’t use antibacterial soap before we went organic so we haven’t tried that yet.

My $20 Goodwill Bench Before and After

BEFORE
image

For a couple of months I’ve been thinking about how I would really like to have a bench in the small entrance way in our house. I was surprised to find the above bench for less than $20 at Goodwill despite the fact that it was a little scratched and a small dog had gotten a hold of it’s bottom right leg and chewed it up a little.

imageI knew that when I was done, will a little help from some of the stain sticks my mother and I have acquired through the years, that you would never be able to tell it had been damaged. What I didn’t know was that my new-to-me bench would actually look like new. I just wish I had taken a picture of the pile of shoes that used to sit where the bench is now so that you could see how much better it looks and you would never guess it’s already full to the brim of shoes.

*Stain Stick Tip*- Grab a small rag and wipe over the spots you have colored in. It helps to blend the stain into the grain of the wood so it looks a lot more natural and has less marker lines.

If anyone knows where this bench originally came from please leave me a comment. I would be curious to hear.

Natural, Organic, and Chemical Free Living Successes and Failures

brenaturalorganicproducts
At the beginning of 2012 I became more interested than ever in eliminating and removing chemicals from my home. You can read about that decision HERE. Since we are now well into 2013 I thought I should post an update.

Towards the end of 2012 I really slacked off on this but I now have a couple of friends and my sister who are all excited about going chemical free and it has made me want to recommit myself to this lifestyle. It’s a lot more fun to have people to talk to about the stuff we make/buy and compare results. The picture above is actually some of the chemical free items a friend of mine recently bought for her home.

Chemical Free Successes

– I replaced my deodorant that contained aluminum with baking soda and then eventually with Tom’s of Maine Apricot deodorant. The baking soda worked really well but it wasn’t as convenient to apply a powder as it was to use a deodorant stick.

– I replaced my toothpaste with Tom’s of Maine toothpaste and it actually helped me with the chronic canker sores I have gotten since I was a child.

– I switched to a green cleaning spray and now switched to a spray bottle of vinegar that I use when cleaning around the house instead of Lysol or other chemicals.

– I received a cast iron skillet from my brother for Christmas and I LOVE it! We use it all the time for cooking instead of Teflon.

– We used vinegar to scrub the mold/mildew off of the walls and ceiling in our bathroom instead of something stronger and so far it has worked well.

– We have stopped heating up anything in plastic in the microwave.

– I made my own homemade weed killer out of vinegar and salt and it did work!

– I also recently found The Environmental Working Group’s Cleaning Products search engine which allows you to search for your cleaning products and see how harmful they are on people and the environment. This just makes me want to throw away all of the non-chemical free products in our house, which I am slowly doing as I replace them with chemical free options.

Edit– You can also go to The Environmental Working Groups Search Engine Skin Deep to search for all of your personal care products and makeup. I searched for all of the products I use frequently and I was in good shape except for my hand cream, which I now need to replace.

Chemical Free Mixed Results

– We have a couple of stoneware items to cook with which were very nice gifts. I should use these more often.

– I got a great deal on some green works cleaning spray and I used it for about half a year and I liked it a lot. Now I have switched to vinegar which is cheaper and even more chemical free.

– We tried organic coffee and rainforest certified coffee this year and we liked it a lot but I can’t say we noticed a difference from regular coffee. It is just so much more expensive that we haven’t continued buying it unless we get really great deals on it.

– I got a good deal on Method dish soap at target after coupons and I tried the cucumber melon scent and I loved it. I didn’t have as good of luck with other Method products though.  However, I have had good luck recently getting dish soap for free so I found it hard to justify buying natural dish soap. If I have to buy more then I can see buying natural/organic dish soap if I can get it for cheaper. Also apparently Method products aren’t rated very well as far as green products go.

– I was excited to get Botanical cleaning wipes for free at Winn-Dixie and they work but unfortunately they smell so strongly and strangely that it makes me not want to use them. But we do use them on occasion.

– I thought that the Physician’s Formula Organic mascara we tried worked well but when my eyes watered it burned my eyes in a way that my non-organic mascara never did.

-I tried natural motion sickness medicine. It did seem to help a little bit but just not as much as Dramamine. I did however find that ginger chews seemed to help for shorter trips.

– I used vinegar and baking soda to clean our toilet and it actually worked really well except for around the bottom flush area. So this result was mixed.

Chemical Free Failures

– I was able to buy Yes to Tomatoes shampoo and conditioner at Walgreens on sale for about $2 each, which is really cheap for Organic/Natural personal care products, but every time I used them they gave me a really bad headache. I ended up giving them to another family member that wasn’t bothered by them.

– I got some free Yes to Carrots hand cream after a coupon. It burned my chapped hands and turned them red. I ended up getting rid of it. I haven’t had good luck with the Yes To brand of products so far. I don’t know if I will buy any more.

– I bought some Method Laundry detergent and cleaning spray right around the time that I broke out in horrible full body hives. I can’t say for sure that either of these items contributed to the hives but I just can’t be sure so I got rid of both of them. Also. as I mentioned before. apparently Method products aren’t rated very well as far as green products go.

– We have really liked most of the Organic/Natural food products we have tried but we find them to be a lot more expensive than regular food products. We still buy them when we find good deals but it would be impossible to stick to our $200 a month grocery budget if we only bought Natural/Organic foods.

– We have bought some glass food storage containers but I wish we had more. They are just a lot more expensive than our stockpile of plastic food containers that were mostly free.

*Even though not everything we have tried has worked, I’m still glad that I have kept going and made progress*

image

What I’m working on (See the above picture)

–  I purchased Dr Bronner’s castile soap and I’m hoping to use it to make  cleaning and household products.

soapwithtextcrop

– I already used the Dr Bronner’s castile soap to make 2 ingredient hand soap which is supposed to be a lot less harsh on my always chapped hands. So far so good. We have had great luck with turning this into foaming hand soap that we now use all over our house. Click HERE for the recipe.

– I have also been sick and haven’t had any luck with antibiotics so I’ve decided to try some natural  medicine, saline spray, vitamin C and apple cider vinegar. I’m actually feeling a lot better, but I had already been sick for a while by the time I started it so it’s hard to say if the virus just ran its course. I actually do think that the natural medicine helped because I was still really sick when I started with it. Edit– I am now entirely better in about 4 days after almost two weeks of being sick. Next time I get sick I’m going to start this right away to see if I get healthy faster.

– I just bought some Gud (by Burt’s Bees) natural shampoo and conditioner and hopefully I will have better luck with that than I did with the Yes to Tomatoes products. So far so good and it smells excellent. Edit– I don’t think the conditioner is as good as the non-natural but it still works.

Our garden is still in the early stages but I’m hoping we will be able to get some nice veggies out of it.

– I made some baking soda body wash (mix baking soda and water until moist) this morning but I haven’t been able to try it yet. Edit– It works great so far!

– I would really like to try making my own natural hand cream but this seems to require more cooking and ingredients than some of the simple recipes I’ve tried so I’m going to keep looking until I find a recipe that I really like before I attempt it.

– I bought some essential oils to use instead of perfume (which is full of chemicals) but I’ve been so sick I haven’t tried it yet.

May 2013 Grocery and Household Item Budget

imageOur goal is to spend only around $200 a month on all groceries and household items and this month we were $70 under! This was a little bit of an unusual month for us as far as our grocery budget goes. As exciting as that is, it’s only because of the Free $100 Publix Gift Card I won. This took $100 off of our budget so we would actually have been about $30 over this month otherwise.

We were on track to spend even less in May but towards the end of the month I recommitted myself to eating really, really healthy. Therefore, I didn’t want to eat some of the food we already had in the house and had to go out to buy more meats, veggies, etc. It did cost a little more but it was definitely worth it and I’m going to continue the healthy eating into June (and hopefully longer) so we will see how this affects the grocery budget next month.

We also ate out more this month than we have in probably an entire year. We had a lot to celebrate so I feel that it was entirely worth it. Eating out isn’t included in our grocery budget.

May Totals-

Spent- $129.84

Saved- $309.73 (not including savings from stores such as Aldi and Dollar Tree which are hard to calculate)

Remember- This budget is for two adults and we eat almost all of our meals at home. This also includes all household items such as toilet paper, soap, cleaning products, toothpaste, etc.

We Finally Planted Our Garden!

imageI know it doesn’t look like much yet but we are very excited that we have finally planted our garden! We planted a variety of vegetables and flowers in organic soil so here’s hoping something grows! I would love to be able to eat some veggies we grew ourselves, especially since we will know that they won’t have been sprayed with chemicals. I bought all of the pots and planting boxes from Dollar Tree for $1 each, I bought a huge bag of organic potting soil from Big Lots for $8, and the seeds were 4 or 5 packs for $1 on sale. My aunt also gave us a bag of her Marigold seed so I’m really hopping those will grow. I will post an update on the garden soon!

After we finished gardening we rode our bikes around our neighborhood and enjoyed the coolish Florida weather. The we went to the movies to see Iron Man 3. We used a movie gift card I had won at work so our tickets were free. Overall, we had a really frugal, fun day!

How We Turned A Bird Cage Into A Small Pet Cage

imageA few months ago we decided to buy a friend for our pet rat Benny. We wanted to buy a dumbo rat since Benny is a regular albino feeder rat, however, the pet store had two Dumbo rats and I just couldn’t split them up. So we now have three pet rats- Benny, Olive, and Ash.

image

You can see Olive and Ash in the above picture, with Benny’s cute little pink feet in the corner. What we didn’t anticipate was that Benny and our new ratty babies didn’t get along when they first met. We found ourselves needing another cage from them as they were rapidly outgrowing the small pet playhouse they were living in. Coincidentally, my friend had an old bird cage that she was willing to sell me for $20.

imageWe ended up converting the bottom metal wired floor into a second floor and cutting part of it to form a ladder to the first floor so they could climb up. We fill the pull out tray at the bottom of the cage with bedding and it is really easy to clean up. Another advantage of the bird cage was that it had a door on the side that we propped open so that the ratty babies could travel from their new cage to their old playhouse and back. Now they have a whole Rat Condo and for $25 cheaper than the smallest rodent cage at the pet store.imageFortunately, all of our rat babies now get along and they take turns all living together in the different cages.

Replacing My Ghetto Fabulous Car Mirror

image

When my car mirror first broke several months ago I panicked and thought it would need to be replaced right away. My father found a new one for me on eBay for about $30 including shipping. Meanwhile, I taped the mirror back on and it worked just fine. I wasn’t sure just how bad or noticeable it looked that I had a mirror held onto my car by clear tape. As a frugal living blogger, I asked myself, was my vanity worth the $30 to replace the mirror? I should mention that my car was bought off of eBay about 7 years ago for $2,000 and it’s still running. I take good care of my car and plan to drive it until it dies but it didn’t seem worth $30 for a cosmetic fix to replace a mirror that was working just fine with a little bit of tape.

However, it was still winter when the mirror broke and I forgot to take into account how Florida sun destroys things! As soon as the weather warmed up the tape melted and no matter how many times I taped that mirror back on it just wouldn’t stay. I gave up and ended up driving around with the mirror hanging off of my car (like in the above photo) and that I knew looked more than a little ghetto fabulous. It took about a month until I could buy a new one off of eBay, wait for it to be shipped and then figure out how to replace it, all the while thinking I should have just done that in the first place.

imageThis is the mirror when it arrived from eBay.

imageThe screws and plug that held the mirror in place.

imageMe, with my long nails, holding the socket set and wrench I used to replace the mirror.

imageThe new mirror finally in place.

imageYou can see how much shinier the mirror on the left of the photo is than the mirror on the right.

So in the end, I probably should have replaced the mirror when it first broke, but I had good intentions trying to save money. I am proud because I replaced it myself, with help from B, when neither of us had ever done that before. It cost a friend of mine over $100 to replace the mirror on their car so I know we saved at least $70.

How to Buy and Dress in Business Clothes for Less

imageEveryone knows that buying business and dress clothes can be expensive. When I was about to graduate from college and start looking for my first ‘real job’ I only had one day to get a suit and business dress outfit appropriate for a job fair. My sister, who is also my fashion consultant, took me to the mall and several other department stores and here is what I got-

– $45 for my suit jacket (My friends assure me this was a bargain) from Kohl’s
– $10 for a dress shirt on clearance from H&M
– $20 for a pencil skirt on clearance from Express
– $5 for nylons from Target
– $15 for clearance dress shoes from Target
– $7 conservative earrings from Claire’s
Total- $102

I don’t think I did badly on this trip because I did need the items right away, we did find some great clearance deals on name brands, and everything we got was such great quality I still wear these items today (minus the nylons). A woman from the FBI actually stopped me and wanted to know where I got my suit jacket- it’s stylish and professional looking. When I explained to a friend what I spent on my suit jacket (thinking it was a lot) she was shocked saying she had spent more than $200 on her suit jacket alone. Apparently my outfit worked because I did get my first full time job. Knowing I was going to need to wear business dress clothes 5 days a week at work I realized that my clothing budget could quickly get out of hand. So while I don’t think that I overspent by any means, my frugal side is always asking “Can I get it for cheaper?”

The answer is yes! I have now learned a LOT of ways to save on dress clothes that I didn’t know as a person who had never had to wear real dress clothes before.

1. Shop Clearance Sales- Now is a great time to hit up those mall clearance sales! Here in Florida, clothes that are conservative enough to wear as dress clothes sometimes fall into the category of winter clothes  and many are on sale right now! See the dresses I got below for $5 and $10.

2. Shop Second Hand for Name Brands- You CAN shop second hand and still look expensive! On all of the dress shirts in the above picture I only spent between .25¢ and $2 and they are name brands like Express, New York and Company, American Eagle, Ralph Lauren, etc. Some of them would cost as much as $60 brand new. Most of these items are from thrift shops but the black sweater was only .25¢ at a yard sale and looks new.

3. Know Your Size in Good Brands– This is something that could take a while but I have found that dress clothes sizes in certain brands don’t fluctuate as much as normal clothing. I know that a size Small dress shirt from New York & Company will fit me without trying it on. This saves a lot of time especially at thrift shops where they don’t always have fitting rooms.

4. Find Stores that Sell Basics Pieces for Cheap– I know that Wet Seal in the mall carries cute, fitted, black dress pants for around $20 and I know they sell them in ‘Short’ length. It isn’t worth it for me to buy dress pants and then take the time and energy to get them hemmed. Especially when I know I can go to Wet Seal and buy a pair that already fits correctly for $20.

5. Stock Up– You probably already stock up on good deals on household items so why wouldn’t you stock up on clothes you will need to buy down the road anyways? I no longer work full time but I will be starting my teaching job in a few months. I realize that I will have to buy dress clothes regardless of if I find them on sale for really cheap this summer or if I wait until right before my job starts and have to pay full price.

6. Buy Good Basic Pieces– You will probably need a black suit jacket, a pair of black dress pants, a black skirt and some basic button up shirts. These are all versatile pieces that you can mix and match with a lot of outfits. They will never go out of style and if you invest in quality garments you will have them for a really, really long time. Quality doesn’t always mean expensive. If I buy a New York & Company shirt for $2 at a thrift store it is still the same quality as if I paid $60 for it at the store.

7. Shop In Your Closet- What do you already own that can be used as office wear? When I was working full time I found a great pair of black heels that I had bought for $15 but then never worn because they were a little too conservative for going out but they were great for the office. I also had a pair of tan pants that I used to wear hostessing at a restaurant that were great for casual days. Yesterday, I realized that I have a floral print dress that would be appropriate for teaching.

8. Buy Pieces that You Can Mix and Match– Buy tops and bottoms that you can mix and match to make new outfits. You won’t look like you are wearing the same clothes all the time when you wear them in different combinations.

9. Take Pictures of Outfits- If you find a cute top and bottom that go well together take a picture. It will help you to pick out cute clothes when are half asleep in the morning. You can print them out or keep them in a folder on your computer or phone.

10. Don’t Forget Your Accessories- Accessorizing an outfit differently can make it look completely different. Add scarves, belts, or necklaces to give your look a new twist.

11. Winter Clothes Can Sometime Work as Dress Clothes– Here in Florida most people have summer clothes and winter clothes. My winter clothes are in a box in storage for most of the year. However, sometimes winter clothes can work well as office dress clothes because they tend to be a little more conservative.

12. Think Comfortable– If you want to buy something and it isn’t comfortable think twice. Most of the time you will be wearing dress clothes for an 8 or 9 hour work day so if something isn’t comfortable you probably won’t end up wearing it.

13. Know Where to Spend Your Money– I will spend a little more for a piece that I will be able to wear often like a suit jacket or pencil skirt. I won’t spend that a lot on a patterned dress because like the ones below because I know I won’t be able to wear them as much.

14. Use Discounts and Coupons– Students and Seniors receive 10% off at Goodwill. If you have a Target debit card you receive 5% off. My mother works at Target so she receives an additional 10% off. Stores like Bells and Kohls often give out $5 or $10 off coupons. Look for coupons from your favorite stores in the Sunday paper before you shop. Every little bit helps.

15. Don’t rule out the juniors or kids departments– They are usually cheaper and often have more conservative cuts. I was able to buy a comfortable, grey, longish suit jacket form the kids department for $20 in a size large. It’s comfortable and goes with a lot of outfits.

16. Don’t buy everything in one day– The less time you have to purchase your dress clothes the more you will spend. If you have the time it always helps to wait for sales, use coupons and look at second hand store which can all be hit or miss if you only look once.

17. Can you buy it online for cheaper?– Sometimes I find pieces that I love but at prices I don’t. One tip I have learned is to look on eBay or Amazon for the same piece at a much lower price or even at the same store’s online shop that might have a coupon code or sale the physical store doesn’t.

image

This suit jacket is the same brand and fit as the black one I paid $45 for at Kohls. Only this one I found a week later for $3.50 in grey. The picture doesn’t do it justice because it’s actually a really cute pinstripe.

image

I paid $5.50 for this short, cute, black jacket. It’s a little more casual than my regular suit jacket and I like it because I can mix things up, not always having to wear the same jacket. These two jackets provide me with a variety that I wouldn’t have without a huge price tag if I bought all of my suit jackets for $50 to $100 each.

image

I will need some cooler yet conservative dress clothes in the fall when I start teaching. The college campus I will be working on is very large so it requires a lot of walking, not to mention it will be 90 degree Florida weather that doesn’t usually go well with dress pants and a suit jacket. So I was excited when I stumbled across some cute dresses that I can wear with a lighter suit jacket. This dress was $5 on sale at Cotton On this week.

image
This dress was $10 on sale at Cotton On this week.

Knowing that I am going to need dress clothes in the next few months has allowed me the time I need to purchase quality business clothes for less. I’m really excited to wear my expensive looking dress clothes because I’m the only one who needs to know that they weren’t.

What do you do to save money on business dress clothes?
